The Chiang Mai temple tour is the perfect chance to sample the most famous and beautiful of the city’s 36 Buddhist temples (Wats), both inside the city walls and in the nearby countryside. 

Start your Chiang Mai temple tour with a pick-up from your hotel in the city about 30 minutes to an hour before the start of the tour. From there you’ll visit Wat Chedi, an ancient structure in Central Chiang Mai first constructed in 1411. The temple once rose over 278 feet (84 meters) above the city before it was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1545. Glance inside the temple to observe statues of guardian spirits that some say protect the temple to this day. 

The tour will also ascend the rolling hills surrounding the Chiang Mai to experience the immaculate Wat Phrathat Doi Sutep, perched high above the urban center near the summit of the peak of Doi Suthep. The final staircase leading to the site is adorned with the impressive body of the mythical dragon-headed serpent, or Naga, snaking its way down 306 steps.

Over the course of the tour, gain first-hand insight into habits of the temples’ Buddhist monks as they go about their daily routines, plus plenty of opportunities to photograph historic environs of Chiang Mai and the majestic views from the foothills surrounding the city.

The tour picked us up at our hotel, as planned, in a nice van and we went with about 6 travelers to the temples. The guide did a great job of explaining the history of each temple, while also giving us time to wander and take photos on our own and enjoy each space. I really enjoyed our tour guide and highly recommend this tour! It was great to have someone to share the history about each location, so taking the tour added a lot of value to our experience of touring the temples.

This half day tour is a fabulous introduction to the major Wats and sights of Chaing Mai. We were in a small group and on a timetable - but this let us know where we'd like to go and spend more time when we go back one day (we must!). Our guide kept us on schedule yet gave us all the freedom to explore when on site, making sure we were well cared for. The magnificent Doi Suthep is the crowning experience of the day - we had been told "If you haven't been there, you haven't been to Chaing Mai" - and it is a very busy spot, so we really appreciated having a driver to drop us off and a guide to help us get through the crowds to the right places! Because this is only a half day, I think it makes a great option for families and for people who want some alone time to explore in the afternoons and evenings.

This was a very pleasant experience. We’re not one for many tours but our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and personable. He explained the history of each temple and was very courteous to our needs. The tour also isn’t too long so this is perfect for anyone who may not have too much time to spare and still wants to go out at night for dinner.

This is a very worthwhile tour of some of the most beautiful temples in Chiang Mai. The only downside was that our guide, although knowledgeable, was quite young, and therefore not terribly professional, and had an accent that made her hard to understand. We felt that we missed a lot because of not being able to understand what she was saying. What we thought was National T-shirt Day, turned out to be National Teachers Day! Still a good tour!
