The Basics

A visit to Hanoi wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Old Quarter. Here you can admire the neo-Gothic St. Joseph’s Cathedral, tour the Huyen Thien Pagoda, explore Ngoc Son Temple, and pass through the Old City Gate—one of four original entrances to the heart of the Royal City.

Guided tour options through this bustling part of town abound. Sightsee on a traditional cyclo tour through the ancient streets, sample some of the neighborhood’s best Vietnamese bites on a food-centric walking tour, or explore the Old Quarter’s numerous shops and markets on a guided shopping excursion. A variety of half-day walking tours cover the area’s top highlights, while full-day Hanoi city tours often include a visit to the Old Quarter.

Great experience
Absolutely loved the food tour, catered to suit our group of 4. Our guide Jenny spoke very good English and was very helpful and friendly. I most likely wouldn't have tried the different food offered to us had we not gone on the tour. Highly recommended

Street Food Tour & Water Puppet Show at Hanoi Old Quarter
I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, particularly you can customized it as much as you like. We took the suggestion from the tour company and rented a car (with a driver) to travel around. Even though the distance is not far, for foreigners like ourselves, the car is more of a safety option - not because of people, but for the organized traffic chaos! We asked for a food tour and sightseeing combo, definitely recommend!

Hanoi Old Quarter Walking Tour Guide (half day)
My guide Minh was really lovely and didn’t get us lost too much 😄. The tour was a lovely discovery of a few landmarks of the Old Quarter. Because of the puppet show I had decided to attend my tour was cut a bit short but still enjoyable.

Hanoi Old Quarter with Cyclo Tours for Small Group
I was expecting only the cyclo tour with guide but to my surprise a 2 hour walking tour was also included. We started off in Old Quater Hanoi and the guide was very friendly and explained the history of the city and places we visited in great detail. After that the cyclo tour started and you get to enjoy the old quater in the crazy Hanoi traffic!

Hanoi Old Quarter Walking Street Food - Small Group Tour
I highly recommend this excellent tour. It'a a great value - six different stops for a variety of authentic Vietnamese Street foods. Our guide Lucy was very knowledgeable and friendly. and the food was great! It's a walking tour, so one gets a great sense of the Old Quarter. We ate at places we would not have gone to on our own, including a great coffee place hidden in the back of a second floor building.

Street Food Tour & Water Puppet Show at Hanoi Old Quarter
We had a great day with Huyen and Kien. They suggested some options and took us to Ho Chi Ming Complex, a secret café, and famous bun cha restaurant and accompanied us walking around the Old Quarter. They were very informative and we got to know about the city and their culture well. We also felt secured being with locals especially on ourfirst day in Hanoi. Thank you Huyen and Kien!

Small-Group Street Food Bike Tour of Hanoi Old Quarter
Explore Hanoi by walking in a group is very good. The tour guide, named is Anna, always answer our "what and why" question than compare to our culture. Besides that, we taste 4 different traditional food that really good. The tour guide serves no pork food...

Our tour guide, Ling, was wonderful and gave us a fantastic tour of the old quarter, with stops to try all the Vietnamese specialties. The food was delicious, as was the 'unique-to-Hanoi' egg coffee!Everyone should take this tour in Hanoi!

Arrived in Hanoi and the Hanoi Street...

Hanoi Food on Foot: Walking Tour of Hanoi Old Quarter
Arrived in Hanoi and the Hanoi Street Food on Foot Tour was our first experience, and what a way to start! We met our tour guide Lisa and she proceeded with our first step of the tour and that is how to cross Hanoi streets weaving between cars and motor scooters. There were four of us and when we crossed the busy streets filled with scooters she yelled sticky rice and we all stuck together and crossed the maze of scooters. The highlight of our walking tour was the stop where we had buon cuon a dumpling type dish that I had never had. The second famous is Banh Mee - Best sandwich In town - Freshly-baked French baguette with pate, roasted pork or chicken, pickled veggies, cilantro, hot chilis, the whole thing. The places we stopped were very local and delicious. Definitely lots of delicious food. We met wonderful people on the tour and stopped and had beer with everyone afterwards. What a great experience with people from all over the world. I definitely recommend this company and especially Vi our tour guide. She was fun, so nice, and had such an upbeat attitude. Good job Lisa!!!!!!

Hanoi Old Quarter Walking Street Food - Small Group Tour
My wife and I are in our 50s and do not ride motorbikes at home so it was a bit of adventure for us to take this tour. We were not disappointed. The student drivers were genuine in their manner and naturally pleasant.Their driving was safe and we never felt any real discomfort despite the squall at the beginning of the tour. The food was all very nicely tasting - a welcome respite from the expensive but non genuine tasting meals we had chosen for ourself otherwise.

Hanoi Old Quarter Walking Street Food - Small Group Tour
I liked the great price, multiple choice of times for this tour with flexibility to change, and the communication was prompt and clear. Our lovely guide was knowledgable and personable. It was a bonus to explore little alleys and upstairs dining areas along with the varied and tasty foods we tried. Be warned, some may not fancy the very old and sometimes grotty entrance areas to our stops, however, I found it a great adventure. We had 8 on our tour, which was just manageable in the busy Hanoi streets. Original Egg Coffee was a perfect finish to the tour.

What to Eat in the Hanoi Old Quarter

Due to limited space in the old buildings, street food is especially popular in the Old Quarter. Don’t miss out on some of the neighborhood’s most famous dishes, likebat su (China bowls),cha ca (roasted fish),pho bo (Vietnamese beef soup), and egg coffee.
